Safety briefing

Matt and John and all the guides who work for us are fully qualified to run the adventures that we offer. The UK has a robust qualifications system that trains and assesses outdoor activity leaders, checks that we have a required amount of personal experience and ensures that we keep up to date with current best practice. National Coasteering Charter

To gain our qualifications we have to gain a large amount of personal and leadership experience in mountaineering, climbing, walking, coasteering and gorge walking in Skye and across the UK.

For example to carry out our Mountain & Rock adventures Matt and our guides hold the Mountaineering Instructor Award. This award trains and assesses candidates in the skills required for instructing mountaineering, including all aspects of summer rock climbing, the coaching of lead climbing, and scrambling. To gain this award you must meet these criteria:

> Hold the Summer Mountain Leader award

> Have led a minimum of 30 multi-pitch climbs at VS or above

> Have led a minimum of  20 group hill days/climbing days

> Attend a 9 day training course at one of the nation mountain centres

> Climb a further 20 multi-pitch VS climbs

> Lead a further 20 mountain days

> Teach at least 20 rock climbing days

> Pass an assessment course

> Undergo a set amount of continuing professional development days.

The above requirements are the bare minimum and all our guides have a massive breadth of mountaineering experience that goes beyond this.

First Aid

We all hold valid and appropriate first aid certificates and in addition to this practice our skills regularly. John and Matt are both trained through the BASP scheme. British Association of Ski Patrollers

Local Knowledge

A very important component to working safely and successfully in the outdoors. We are active on the mountains and in the seas around Skye all year. It is critical to know your patch under a variety of weather, tidal or snow conditions depending on what the activity is. This is especially important in the Cuillin where route finding in poor visibility is a critical skill!
